CAUSES

An anal fistula, or fistula in ano, typically develops as a result of an infection that starts in an anal gland, leading to the formation of an abscess. The most common causes of anal fistulas include:

  1. Anal Abscess: An abscess forms when an anal gland becomes blocked, often due to infection with bacteria. The abscess can lead to the development of a tunnel or tract, resulting in a fistula.

  2. Crohn's Disease: Individuals with Crohn's disease, an inflammatory bowel disease, may be more prone to developing anal fistulas. The inflammation in the digestive tract can contribute to the formation of abscesses and fistulas.

  3. Infection: Infections in the anal or rectal area, such as sexually transmitted infections or other bacterial infections, can contribute to the development of anal fistulas.

  4. Trauma or Injury: Previous injury or trauma to the anal or rectal area, such as a previous surgery or childbirth, can sometimes lead to the formation of fistulas.

  5. Chronic Constipation: Straining during bowel movements due to chronic constipation can contribute to the development of anal fistulas.

  6. Hidradenitis Suppurativa: This is a skin condition characterized by the formation of painful lumps under the skin. Fistulas may develop in the anal region in individuals with hidradenitis suppurativa.

It's important to note that anal fistulas often result from a combination of factors, and individual cases may vary. Seeking prompt medical attention is crucial for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
